Our Story

From one oven on Hazel Street to shelves across New Jersey.

Taskin calls itself the first Turkish bakery in the USA to bring traditional handmade baking to the American market. Twenty nine years and roughly eighty bakers later, the method has not changed.

Handmade is a schedule, not a slogan

Every loaf, every tray of borek and every sheet of baklava is shaped by a person. That is the reason the bakery runs 24 hours rather than the other way around. Dough works on its own clock, and someone has to be there when it is ready.

It is why there is a full shift at 3am, and why the counter is open at 3am too. If the bakers are already here, there is no reason to lock the door.

Kosher, halal and non-kosher products are all made in house, which is unusual and takes real discipline to keep separate.

How it grew

  1. 1997

Two people and an oven on Hazel Street

Kadir and Naciye Taskin open the bakery in Paterson with the breads they grew up with, and the conviction that traditional Turkish baking belongs on an American counter.

  2. The wholesale years

    The bread leaves the building

Independent markets and grocers across New Jersey start carrying Taskin bread. The bakery moves to a round-the-clock schedule, because a wholesale route wants product before the store opens.

  3. 2019

A bronze sofi Award for the pide

Their Turkish pide bread takes bronze in Baked Goods at the Specialty Food Association's sofi Awards. It is the loaf the whole bakery is built on.

  4. Today

Five daughters, roughly 80 people, still by hand

Kadir and Naciye's five daughters run the bakery now, with Derya Taskin as Vice President. Their pide is carried in ShopRite locations including Parsippany. The oven has not been allowed to go cold.

The loaf everything is built on

Pide is the reason wholesale buyers call. It is scored by hand in a lattice, proofed, and baked in a brick hearth. It is also the product that took a bronze sofi Award in 2019, and the one you will find on a ShopRite shelf in Parsippany.
